TAYLOR HOMES START WITH A PLAN
AND SO CAN YOU (START WITH A PLAN, THAT IS!)
In 1958 when Taylor Homes began, plans were very simple, often sketched on a legal pad and later hand-drawn by a draftsman. Can you start with just such a simple plan? Yes, we’ll show you how in this article.
Sixty years later, Taylor Homes blueprints are drafted by a Computer Aided Design (CAD) program. Do you have to have such expertise in order to build a house? No, because we do have the expertise in designing homes with cutting edge technology. CEO Brent Taylor designs every home personally. Customers bring ideas on everything from sketch pads to napkins to talk through what they want in a custom home. Brent takes time with each customer to listen to what each family member wants to make a house a home.
Here’s where we’re going with all this. You can start dreaming and sketching out your house now. With decades of experience, we know all the ways not to do something, so we’ll stick with five basic things to get you started the right way!
1. CLOSE YOUR EYES AND IMAGINE HOME
What comes to mind when you think about the word “home”? What warm, inviting feelings do you have? What kind of spaces give you that feeling? Do you picture certain kinds of homes that you wish you could live in? Take some time with this, don’t rush it. Try it, and if no memories or thoughts of home come immediately, that’s okay. Just keep this idea of imagination in the back of your mind. You may dream of a place, see something or smell something that reminds you. Getting into the mindset of imagining freely is the key.
2. RECORD YOUR IDEAS IN A FUN PLACE
Like we said earlier, some customers meet with us and have little other than a sketch on a napkin. Other customers come with architectural plans. Since HGTV started, people are usually not short of ideas, but it helps if you actually write down ideas you like and distinguish between ideas you really want to pursue and ones in your head that you are talking about because you saw it on Love It or List It! Get a simple notebook, jot down ideas in your phone notes app, any way you can record what you really want to pursue in building your dream home.
3. KEEP YOUR EYES OPEN
Now that you’re thinking about ideas, dreams for your house, you will naturally begin turning your head and looking at homes as you drive around town. A porch or certain kinds of windows or front door will catch your eye. You won’t be able to stop and take a photo of everything you see, so remember some details about what you see and add those to your notes later or look up a similar detail online and find a photo. It’s a good idea to take photos in a setting where you are welcomed to take photos. We don’t recommend taking photos of homes that are occupied without permission, but often an owner or neighbor is proud of their home and may welcome you to take a photo of a design element if you ask.
4. ASK LOTS OF QUESTIONS
We think asking questions is one of the best way to arrive at good outcomes. Ask better questions, and you are going to get better answers. Ask yourself questions about the kinds of spaces you want. How big of a house do I want? Do I want to take care of a big yard? That will make a difference on how big of a lot to purchase. What are the non-negotiables of your house? In other words, ask yourself what you can live with and what you can’t live without if you are spending your hard-earned money on your dream house.
5. GIVE US A CALL AT TAYLOR HOMES
We promise, if you call and ask a question, you are not contractually obligated to build a house with us. We’re experts in our field, we’ve been doing this a long time, and we have a huge knowledge base of three generations of builders who can answer just about any question you have about building a home. There are so many details, we know, and we’re here to help you take the steps you want to take now toward building a home. Even if you are just “kicking tires”—yeah, we know that’s a car buying metaphor, but anyway, even if you are just kicking houses and you think you won’t build till next year, give us a call and ask your questions. Did we say we’re here to help yet? Once you are a Taylor Homes customer—or even a question asker who hasn’t built a house yet—you’re always a Taylor Homes customer. We service the houses we build, and sometimes we get calls from people asking questions ten years after they’ve built a house with us.
